Karbo Terms of Use

This is a translation provided for convenience. In case of any discrepancy, the Danish version prevails.

In short

1. Who we are

Karbo is provided by Stamelli ApS, CVR no. 46705858, Gammel Kalkbrænderi Vej 14, 2. th., 2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark ("Karbo", "we"). You can contact us at [email protected]. The e-mail address is also our point of contact for users and authorities under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA). You can write to us in Danish or English.

2. What Karbo is — and is not

Karbo records what you eat and calculates its nutritional content — carbohydrates in particular — from food data and the amounts you enter.

Karbo is not a medical device. The app is not intended to diagnose, prevent, monitor, predict, treat or alleviate any disease, and it does not calculate, suggest or assess doses of insulin or any other medicine. Karbo does not replace advice from your doctor, dietitian or diabetes team.

Karbo is not intended for emergencies. Follow the plan you have from your care team, and call 112 in an emergency.

3. About the numbers

The numbers in Karbo come from Frida, the food database of the National Food Institute at the Technical University of Denmark (CC BY 4.0), the Finnish food database Fineli from THL (CC BY 4.0), USDA FoodData Central (public domain), Open Food Facts (Open Database License 1.0), and foods that users have created themselves. The sources, their licences and Karbo's changes to the data are listed under Data sources in the app.

The numbers are averages and do not necessarily match your particular product, preparation or portion. If the packaging shows different numbers, those apply.

We work to make the numbers correct, but we cannot promise that they are free of errors or complete. This also applies to the numbers from DTU, Fineli, USDA and Open Food Facts. The publishers of these sources are not responsible for the numbers in Karbo or for the consequences of using them. If you find a number that looks wrong, please write to us. What we ourselves are responsible for is set out in section 15.

Some numbers are converted or read by the app — for example grams from dl or tablespoons in a recipe, or values read from a nutrition label with the camera. These are marked in the app, and you must check them before you use them.

Foods created by other users are shown as community foods in search. We do not check them in advance, beyond the app checking that their nutrition values add up.

If you would like a copy, in machine-readable form, of the Open Food Facts data that Karbo uses, you can write to us.

4. Your responsibility when using the numbers

You decide what you eat and how you use the numbers. Check important numbers against the packaging or the recipe, and talk to your doctor or diabetes team before you change anything in your treatment.

If you have, or have had, an eating disorder, talk to your care provider before using an app to record what you eat.

5. Your account

You can use Karbo without creating an account with a name and e-mail address. If you consent to backup when you start the app, it creates an anonymous account so your data can be backed up. You can turn the backup on and off under Profile → Settings → Backup.

To take your data to a new phone, join a family group or send meals to others, you need to sign in, for example with Apple, Google or e-mail. You must keep your login details safe.

You can delete your account and your data at any time under Profile. This also deletes the foods you have created — including those others have been able to see. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription; you cancel that with Apple (see section 10).

6. Age, children and family

You must be at least 15 to use Karbo on your own. If you are under 15, you may only use Karbo with a parent's permission — for example by a parent giving you the family group's code. If you are under 18, a parent must approve subscription purchases; Apple manages this.

A parent can create a profile for a child without an account of their own and log meals on the child's behalf. Whoever creates a child profile must hold parental responsibility or have the parents' permission, and is responsible for the information recorded about the child.

In a family group you can send meals and lunchboxes to each other. A child with their own account decides in their profile whether parents may log and send to them. A member can ask to help another member as a caregiver and thereby see and record meals for them. This only happens if the other member agrees, and either of them can withdraw it. You can leave a group at any time.

7. Foods you create — and the community

When you create a food, it is shared with other users as a community food as soon as its nutrition values add up. This also applies if you use Karbo without signing in, as long as backup is turned on. What is shared is the food's name, brand, category, nutritional content, portions and barcode. A food with missing nutrition values, or with values that do not add up, stays with you.

You keep the rights to what you create. You give Karbo a free, non-exclusive right to store, display, correct and quality-check the food as part of the app and to make it available to other users. The right applies for as long as the food is shared and ends when you delete it or your account.

You confirm that what you create is, to the best of your knowledge, correct — typically read from the packaging — and that you do not infringe anyone else's rights.

Your meals, your dishes and your profile are never shared with the community. Only you and the people you choose to send them to can see them.

8. Content rules

Karbo has zero tolerance for offensive content and abuse. You may not create or share:

You may also not attempt to gain unauthorised access to Karbo, disrupt the app or extract data from it automatically.

If you break these rules, we may hide the content, remove your right to share, or in serious cases close your account (see sections 9 and 12).

9. Reporting, moderation and complaints

You can report a community food with the flag on the food's page — for example if its nutrition values are wrong, if it is not a food, or if it is offensive or spam. Anyone — including people without a Karbo account — can report illegal content by writing to [email protected]. We confirm that we have received the report and tell you what we have decided.

When several different users have reported the same food, it is automatically hidden from everyone except the person who created it. If a user has several foods hidden, they automatically lose the right to share foods. We may also hide content or remove the right to share ourselves if the rules in section 8 have been broken.

You will be notified in the app, with a reason, when we hide something you have shared or remove your right to share. If you disagree, you can complain to [email protected] within six months. A person reviews the complaint and replies to you. If you have lost the right to share, this applies until we may restore it following a complaint. You can always go to court.

10. Subscriptions

Karbo Plus and Karbo Family are bought in the App Store. Apple sells the subscription and handles payment, renewal, cancellation, refunds and the right of withdrawal under Apple's terms. A subscription renews automatically unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the period ends. You cancel under Settings on your iPhone → your name → Subscriptions.

An annual subscription may start with a free trial. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, the subscription becomes paid. You can only get the trial once.

Karbo Family is bought by the person who created the family group. The group's members — up to 4 people in total — then get access to Plus for as long as the subscription is active and they are in the group. Karbo Family is shared through Karbo's own family group, not through Apple's Family Sharing.

The free version of Karbo can be used without a subscription, with the limits shown in the app.

11. Changes to the app and to these terms

We develop Karbo continuously. We may change the app, its features and what is included in the free version and the subscriptions when there is a valid reason. There is one when legal or regulatory requirements are introduced or change, for security reasons, when our data sources, suppliers or Apple make changes, for technical improvements and new features, and if the cost of running Karbo changes significantly.

If a change is to your disadvantage, we will notify you in the app — and by e-mail if we have your address — at least 30 days before it takes effect, with an explanation. You can stop using Karbo and cancel your subscription before the change takes effect. If a change impairs what you have paid for more than slightly, you can terminate the agreement free of charge within 30 days.

Apple gives notice of price changes to subscriptions, and you can cancel before the new price applies.

If we change these terms materially, we will ask you to accept the new terms in the app. You can obtain previous versions by writing to us.

12. Termination

You can stop using Karbo and delete your account at any time (see section 5).

We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly breach these terms. If we have your e-mail address, we will notify you with a reason (see section 9).

If we shut Karbo down entirely, we will give at least 3 months' notice so that you have time to get a copy of your data.

13. Rights

The app, its design and texts, and Karbo's processing of the food data belong to Karbo or our licensors. Your right to use the app follows Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which these terms supplement. You may not copy, resell or systematically extract content from Karbo, except where the law gives you the right to do so. Data that our sources make available under open licences may still be used on the sources' terms.

14. Other services

Some features use other services: sign-in with Apple or Google, and websites you import recipes from. Those services' own terms apply to them. A recipe you import is for your own use and is not shared with the community.

15. Liability

We are liable under the general rules of Danish law. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for personal injury, for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence, or your rights under mandatory rules such as the Danish Sale of Goods Act and product liability rules.

We work to keep Karbo running and available, but we cannot promise that the app will always be free of errors or interruptions. Karbo also works without an internet connection, because your data is stored on your phone.

If you find an error in a number or in the app, please write to us. We correct errors when we become aware of them.

16. Complaints and governing law

If you have a complaint, write to [email protected]. If we cannot find a solution together, you can complain to Nævnenes Hus, Toldboden 2, 8800 Viborg, Denmark, naevneneshus.dk. Complaints about payment and refunds of subscriptions must be directed to Apple.

These terms are governed by Danish law. If you live in another country, you keep the protection you have under the mandatory consumer rules there. You can always bring a case before the courts where you live.

17. Language

These terms are available in Danish and English. If they differ, the Danish version applies.
